Description

With war approaching America knew it would be called upon to aid their Allies so a new aircraftwould need to be developed. Douglas Aircraft designer Ed Heinemanns DB-7/A-20 was chosento be the new attack-bomber. The prototype flew in December 1938 with the first productionaircraft flew on August 17, 1939. Production ran until September 1944 with 7,478 aircraft built.During WWII these were supplied to French, British, Australian, Dutch and Soviet forces as wellas their own U.S. forces.

In 1943 every tenth Douglas A-20G was produced with a new transparent Plexiglas nose thatwould accommodate a Norden bombsight and bombardier. The new A-20J variant would be theformation leader on bombing runs and when this aircraft dropped its bombs everyone else knew itwas their turn. The RAF called the A-20J the Boston Mk. IV and received 169 beginning in thesummer of 1944. This particular aircraft, with 105 mission markings, was piloted by Flt. Sgt. JohnSamain DFM and flown against targets in northern Italy and the Balkans.
